Switzerland’s consumer sentiment index declined to -38 in May 2026 from -37 a year earlier, matching market expectations and pointing to a slightly more pessimistic mood among households. The deterioration was driven mainly by weaker economic expectations, with the corresponding sub-index falling to -45.9 from -42.9 in May 2025. Consumers also grew more cautious about their future finances, as that indicator slipped to -33.8 from -30.3. By contrast, assessments of past financial conditions improved marginally, rising to -44.2 from -44.8 a year earlier. The gauge of willingness to make major purchases remained subdued, easing to -28.7 from -28.0. Overall, consumer sentiment stayed firmly in negative territory, underscoring ongoing concerns about the economic outlook and household financial stability.
