Passenger vehicle sales in India rose 25.3% year-on-year in May 2026 to 379,764 units, a sharp acceleration from the 2.5% increase recorded in April. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), this was the highest May sales figure on record.
The surge in demand was supported by a low base in May of the previous year, as well as stronger consumer appetite driven by lower Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates and easier access to financing. Last month, SIAM noted that the positive momentum seen in the second half of FY 2025–26 had carried over into the first month of FY 2026–27.
