Cape Verde Inflation Rate Rises from 2-Year Low

Cape Verde’s annual inflation rate accelerated to 0.8% in May 2026, up from 0.3% in April, when it had reached its lowest level since March 2024. The pickup in inflation was driven mainly by higher prices in transportation (3.4% vs 0.8% in April), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (3.9% vs 3.8%), and food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.8% vs 0.2%). At the same time, deflation in housing and utilities eased (-3.8% vs -4.2%).

Conversely, price growth slowed in furnishings and household equipment (6.2% vs 6.7%), clothing and footwear (4.2% vs 4.7%), health (2.9% vs 3.1%), recreation and culture (1.3% vs 1.5%), education (0.2% vs 0.3%), hotels, restaurants and cafés (3.5% vs 3.9%), and miscellaneous goods and services (0.6% vs 1.3%). Communication costs moved into decline, falling 0.3% after a 0.1% increase in the previous month. On a monthly basis, the consumer price index rose 0.5%, following gains of 0.1% in each of the prior two months.
