UK Core CPI Inflation Cools Sharply in May, Easing to 0.3% MoM

Core consumer price inflation in the United Kingdom slowed markedly in May 2026, signaling a possible easing of underlying price pressures. Month-over-month, core CPI rose 0.3% in May, down from a 0.7% increase recorded in April 2026, according to data updated on 17 June 2026.

The May reading indicates that the pace of core price growth — which excludes volatile items and is closely watched as a gauge of persistent inflation — has nearly halved on a monthly basis. The comparison is made against the previous month’s performance: April’s 0.7% gain itself reflected the change from March, while May’s 0.3% gain is measured against April.

This deceleration in core inflation may be interpreted by markets as a sign that underlying price pressures are easing, potentially influencing expectations around the future path of UK monetary policy. However, investors and policymakers will likely look to subsequent data releases to assess whether May’s weaker core CPI print marks the start of a sustained trend or a temporary moderation.
