German Producer Price Growth Cools Sharply in May, Signaling Easing Cost Pressures

Producer price inflation in Germany slowed markedly in May 2026, pointing to a moderation in upstream cost pressures for Europe’s largest economy. According to the latest data updated on 19 June 2026, the German Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 0.3% month-over-month in May, down from a 1.2% increase in April 2026.

The month-over-month comparison shows that while producer prices are still climbing, the pace of increases has decelerated notably compared with the previous month. In April, the 1.2% rise reflected a stronger buildup in input costs relative to March, whereas May’s 0.3% gain suggests some easing in price momentum at the producer level.

This moderation in producer prices, which measure changes in the prices received by domestic producers for their output, could eventually feed through to consumer inflation if the trend continues. For now, the latest figures indicate that while cost pressures remain, they are advancing at a slower rate than earlier in the spring.
