German Consumer Sentiment Softens in July as IPSOS PCSI Slips to 42.28

Germany’s consumer confidence weakened in July, with the Thomson Reuters IPSOS Primary Consumer Sentiment Index (PCSI) edging down to 42.28, from 43.22 in June 2026. The latest reading, updated on 9 July 2026, points to a modest deterioration in household sentiment as Germans assess their financial outlook and the broader economic environment.

The drop of just under one point suggests that while confidence remains relatively stable, consumers are becoming slightly more cautious. The PCSI, compiled by Thomson Reuters and IPSOS, tracks perceptions around personal finances, economic expectations, investment climate and job security, and is closely watched as an early gauge of spending intentions.

Although the change from June to July is not dramatic, the downward move may signal increasing unease among German households heading into the second half of 2026. Economists and market participants will be watching upcoming PCSI releases for signs of whether this softening in sentiment becomes a more persistent trend.
