US Small Business Optimism Rebounds

The US NFIB Small Business Optimism Index rose to 97.4 in June 2026, its highest level in four months, up from 95.3 in May and above market expectations of 95.8. Expectations for better business conditions and real sales strengthened significantly. Inflation was cited as the single most important problem by 21% of business owners, an increase of 3 percentage points from May and the highest share since October 2024, keeping inflation as the top concern. Nevertheless, the proportion of owners planning to raise prices in the near term declined. The net percentage of owners expecting better business conditions over the next six months increased by 10 points to a net 13%. “Lower fuel costs provide welcome relief for businesses and consumers alike, and firms are anticipating improved operating conditions over the next six months. However, despite some improvement in the overall environment, elevated interest rates and only modest economic growth are leading owners to remain cautious about hiring and capital spending,” said the NFIB Chief Economist.
