Greece Current Account Deficit Widens Sharply

Greece’s current account deficit widened sharply to €0.960 billion in May 2026, from just €0.004 billion in the same month a year earlier. The primary income deficit increased to €0.751 billion, up from €0.327 billion. At the same time, the secondary income balance swung to a deficit of €0.395 billion, compared with a surplus of €0.515 billion a year earlier, mainly reflecting a substantial drop in receipts from both the general government and other sectors.

By contrast, the goods account deficit narrowed to €2.115 billion from €2.362 billion, as exports jumped by 21.2%, outpacing a 9.6% rise in imports. The services account surplus also grew, reaching €2.300 billion compared with €2.170 billion a year earlier.

Over the January–May period, the country recorded a current account deficit of €8.936 billion, up from €7.303 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year.
