NZX 50 Retreats from Record High on Profit-Taking

New Zealand shares slipped 44 points, or 0.3%, to 13,806 in early trade on Tuesday, as investors locked in profits after the benchmark index notched a record high in the previous session, supported by softer oil prices. Market participants also adopted a cautious stance ahead of key risk events, including the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision, China’s PMI figures, and the release later this week of New Zealand’s July consumer confidence and business outlook surveys.

A further pullback in crude prices, driven by easing tensions in the Middle East, helped contain the market’s downside, as receding inflation worries tempered expectations of additional interest rate hikes. Sector-wise, the broader index was dragged lower largely by financials, healthcare, industrials, and real estate stocks.

Among individual names, Colonial Motor declined 1.5%, Auckland International Airport lost 1.3%, Infratil retreated 1.2%, and Ventia Services Group slipped 0.8%. Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and Henderson Far East Income each fell 0.6%.
