New Zealand Labor Costs Accelerate in Q2 2026, Signaling Rising Wage Pressures

New Zealand’s Labor Cost Index (LCI) picked up pace in the second quarter of 2026, underscoring mounting wage pressures in the economy. According to the latest data updated on 4 August 2026, labor costs rose 0.7% quarter-over-quarter, up from a 0.5% increase recorded in the first quarter of 2026.

The quarter-over-quarter comparison shows that the growth in labor costs is accelerating, with the current quarter’s gain outstripping the previous period. The earlier 0.5% rise in Q1 2026 had been measured against the final quarter of the prior year, while the latest 0.7% figure reflects a stronger step-up in costs from Q1 to Q2 2026.

For markets and policymakers, the faster increase in the LCI suggests that wage growth may be becoming a more significant factor in overall cost and inflation dynamics. Investors will be watching incoming data closely to assess whether this upward trend in labor costs persists into the second half of 2026.
