Japan’s Overtime Pay Growth Stalls at 2.8% in June, Matching May’s Year-on-Year Pace

Japan’s overtime pay growth held steady in June 2026, with the indicator unchanged at 2.80% year-on-year, the same pace recorded in May 2026. The latest data, updated on 4 August 2026, show no further acceleration in overtime compensation compared with a year earlier, suggesting that the recent momentum in extra-hours pay may be stabilizing.

On a year-over-year basis, both the May and June readings reflect identical 2.80% increases versus the same months in 2025. According to the comparison methodology, the “actual” figure for June measures the change from June of the previous year, while the “previous” figure for May compares against May a year earlier.

The flat reading could indicate that, while overtime compensation remains above last year’s levels, additional upward pressure has yet to materialize as of June. Investors and policymakers monitoring labor cost trends in Japan will be watching upcoming releases to see whether overtime pay resumes climbing or settles into a slower growth pattern.
