US Core CPI Ticks Higher in July, Ending Flat Streak

Core consumer prices in the United States rose 0.2% month-over-month in July 2026, marking a pickup from June’s flat reading of 0.0%. The data, updated on 12 August 2026, show that underlying inflation momentum strengthened modestly after pausing in the prior month.

On a month-over-month basis, the “actual” July figure reflects the change in prices compared with June, while the “previous” comparison captures June’s change relative to May. The move from 0.0% in June to 0.2% in July suggests that core inflation pressures, while still contained, have stopped easing and are edging higher again as the third quarter begins.

The core CPI measure excludes volatile food and energy components, making it a closely watched gauge of underlying price trends. Investors and policymakers will be monitoring upcoming releases to see whether July’s uptick signals the start of a renewed firming in inflation or a one-off adjustment following June’s pause.
