Canada’s Common CPI Inches Up to 2.7% in July, Signalling Slight Inflation Firming

Canada’s Common Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 2.7% year-over-year in July 2026, edging up from 2.6% in June, according to data updated on 17 August 2026. The measure, which tracks underlying inflation trends by comparing price changes to the same month a year earlier, suggests a modest firming in core inflation pressures.

The previous reading, recorded for June 2026, showed Common CPI running at 2.6% year-over-year, also measured against June of the prior year. July’s uptick, while incremental, indicates that underlying price growth has not eased further and may reinforce expectations that inflation is stabilizing slightly above earlier levels.

Because both the current and previous figures are calculated on a year-over-year basis—July 2026 versus July 2025, and June 2026 versus June 2025—the latest move will be closely watched by markets and policymakers assessing the persistence of inflation trends in Canada’s economy.
