Mexico Swings to Current Account Surplus in Q2 2026 After Deep Deficit

Mexico’s external balance showed a sharp improvement in the second quarter of 2026, as the current account shifted from a notable deficit to a solid surplus as a share of GDP.

According to data updated on 25 August 2026, the country’s current account moved from -3.10% of GDP in the first quarter of 2026 to 1.60% of GDP in the second quarter. The turnaround marks a swing of 4.7 percentage points in just one quarter, signaling a significant change in Mexico’s external financing needs and the balance between domestic savings and investment.

The move into surplus suggests that Mexico, at least temporarily, generated more resources from trade in goods and services, income, and transfers than it absorbed from the rest of the world in Q2 2026, reversing the financing gap recorded at the start of the year.
