US Core PCE Inflation Picks Up in July, Doubling June’s Monthly Pace

The United States’ core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index—the Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge of underlying inflation—rose 0.2% month-over-month in July 2026, up from a 0.1% increase in June. The July figure, updated on 26 August 2026, indicates a modest firming in price pressures compared with the prior month.

On a month-over-month basis, the “actual” July reading compares the change in prices in July to those in June, while the “previous” 0.1% figure reflects June’s price change versus May. The acceleration from 0.1% to 0.2% suggests that, although inflation remains relatively contained, the disinflation trend is not linear, and price pressures can still fluctuate from one month to the next.

Investors and policymakers are likely to scrutinize this uptick closely, as any sustained firming in core PCE could influence expectations around the future path of US monetary policy. However, with the change still relatively small in absolute terms, markets may view the July move as a minor, though notable, shift rather than a decisive break in the broader inflation picture.
