US Core PCE Holds at 3.3% in July, Signaling Stubborn Underlying Inflation

The United States Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index rose 3.3% year-over-year in July 2026, unchanged from June’s revised 3.3% annual rate. The July reading underscores that underlying inflation pressures remain steady rather than easing, even as markets look for clearer signs that price growth is moving closer to the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.

Core PCE, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, is closely watched by investors and policymakers as the Fed’s preferred gauge of underlying inflation. On a year-over-year basis, both June and July figures reflect the same 3.3% increase compared with the corresponding months a year earlier, indicating that progress on disinflation may have paused over the summer.

With the latest data updated as of 26 August 2026, the flat year-over-year pace in July could complicate expectations for imminent policy easing. Market participants will be watching upcoming inflation releases and Fed communications for clues on whether this plateau in core price pressures proves temporary or signals a more prolonged period of above-target inflation.
