Brunei Trade Surplus Widens Sharply in June

Brunei’s trade surplus widened sharply to BND 622.6 million in June 2026, up from BND 292.6 million in the same month a year earlier, as export growth outpaced imports. On an annual basis, exports jumped 66.7% to BND 1.58 billion, largely driven by a 66.6% surge in mineral fuels. Australia remained Brunei’s largest export market, taking 35.4% of total shipments, followed by China (23.1%), Singapore (9.7%), and Japan (8.4%).

Imports rose at a comparatively slower pace of 46.2% to BND 957.4 million, supported mainly by an 8.9% increase in mineral fuel purchases. Malaysia was the leading source of imports, supplying 54.3% of total inbound shipments, ahead of Australia (11.0%), China (6.6%), the United Kingdom (5.2%), and the United States (2.0%).

Over the first half of 2026, the trade surplus surged to BND 3.77 billion from BND 2.41 billion in the same period a year earlier, as exports expanded by 33.2% while imports grew at a slower rate of 20.2%.
