US Core PPI Slows in August, Signaling Easing Underlying Producer Price Pressures

The United States Producer Price Index excluding food, energy, and transport (core PPI) eased in August 2026, offering a signal of moderating underlying cost pressures at the producer level. The indicator rose 0.3% month-over-month in August, down from a 0.4% increase recorded in July 2026, according to data updated on 10 September 2026.

On a month-over-month basis, the “actual” August reading reflects the change in prices compared with July, while the “previous” figure captures July’s change versus June. The slight cooling from 0.4% to 0.3% suggests a modest deceleration in core producer inflation, a gauge closely watched by markets and policymakers for clues on future consumer price trends and potential monetary policy direction.

The exclusion of the more volatile food, energy, and transport components is intended to provide a clearer view of underlying price dynamics within the production sector. While still positive, the slower pace of increase in August may be interpreted as tentative evidence that pipeline inflation pressures are easing compared with earlier in the summer.
