US energy firms injected 40 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas into storage in the week ending September 4, 2026, exceeding market expectations of a 31-bcf build. This compares with a 69-bcf injection in the same week a year earlier and a five-year (2021–2025) average increase of 52 bcf for that period. The latest build lifted total inventories to 3.254 trillion cubic feet (tcf), 2.4% below the level recorded in the same week a year ago but 4.8% above the corresponding five-year average. In the previous week, ending August 28, energy firms had added 30 bcf of natural gas to storage.
