China’s Consumer Sentiment Edges Lower in September, PCSI Slips to 74.67

China’s Thomson Reuters IPSOS Primary Consumer Sentiment Index (PCSI) inched down in September 2026, signaling a marginal softening in consumer confidence. The index eased to 74.67 in September from 74.79 in August 2026, according to data updated on 11 September 2026.

While the decline is slight, the movement underscores a cautious mood among Chinese consumers as the index retreats from its previous month’s level. The PCSI, which tracks households’ views on current and future economic conditions, personal finances and investment intentions, remains at a relatively elevated reading, suggesting that overall sentiment is still broadly stable despite the minor pullback.

Market participants and analysts will be watching subsequent monthly releases closely to determine whether September’s dip marks the start of a softening trend in consumer sentiment or merely a temporary pause following earlier gains.
