Turkey Swings to Rare Current Account Surplus in July, Easing External Imbalance Concerns

Turkey’s current account balance moved into a small surplus in July 2026, marking a sharp improvement in the country’s external position. According to the latest data updated on 11 September 2026, the current account recorded a surplus of USD 0.04 billion, reversing a deficit of USD 4.19 billion in June 2026.

The turnaround of more than USD 4 billion in just one month underscores a significant shift in Turkey’s trade and income flows with the rest of the world. While the surplus is modest in absolute terms, the move out of deeply negative territory may help ease some pressure on Turkey’s external financing needs and could be viewed positively by investors monitoring the country’s balance of payments dynamics.

Market participants will now be watching closely to see whether July’s surplus proves to be a one-off driven by temporary factors or the start of a more sustained improvement in Turkey’s current account position over the coming months.
