U.S. Core CPI Eases to 2.4% in August, Extending Year-Over-Year Disinflation Trend

Core consumer price inflation in the United States edged down to 2.4% year-over-year in August 2026, from 2.5% in July, according to data updated on 11 September 2026. The reading, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, marks a further moderation in underlying price pressures compared with the same month a year earlier.

On a year-over-year basis, the “actual” August figure compares the change in core prices in August 2026 to August 2025, while July’s “previous” figure reflected the change in July 2026 versus July 2025. The slight deceleration from 2.5% to 2.4% underscores a continued disinflationary trend in core prices, a key gauge closely followed by policymakers and markets for signals on the medium-term inflation outlook.

The latest data point reinforces the pattern of gradually cooling inflation in the core basket, potentially shaping expectations around future monetary policy decisions as investors assess how firmly price growth is converging toward longer-term targets.
