China’s Retail Sales Momentum Eases in August as YTD Growth Slips to 1.13%

China’s retail sector showed a slight loss of momentum in August 2026, with year-to-date retail sales growth easing to 1.13% on a year-over-year basis, down from 1.23% recorded in July 2026.

According to data updated on 15 September 2026, the current figure reflects a comparison of cumulative retail sales growth in August 2026 versus the same period a year earlier, while the previous reading measured July 2026 performance against July 2025. The marginal deceleration suggests that consumer spending, while still expanding, is doing so at a slower pace as the second half of the year progresses.

The softening trajectory in year-to-date retail sales will likely be closely watched by policymakers and investors, as it may signal more cautious household demand and could influence expectations for future economic support measures in China.
