German Wholesale Inflation Accelerates in August as WPI Climbs to 0.9% MoM

Germany’s wholesale prices picked up noticeably in August 2026, with the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) rising 0.9% month-over-month, up from a 0.2% increase in July 2026. The latest data, updated on 15 September 2026, points to a clear acceleration in price dynamics at the wholesale level.

On a month-over-month basis, the August reading shows that wholesale prices are growing more than four times faster than in the previous month. In July, the WPI’s 0.2% gain reflected only a modest increase compared with June, whereas August’s 0.9% jump suggests stronger pricing pressure building further up the supply chain.

For policymakers and markets, the sharper monthly gain in the WPI will be watched closely as a potential early signal of broader inflation momentum. Since the indicator tracks changes in prices that businesses pay for goods on a wholesale basis, sustained increases could eventually filter through to consumer prices in the coming months.
