Japan’s Core Machinery Orders Slide 3.7% in July, Reversing June Surge

Japan’s core machinery orders fell 3.7% month-over-month in July 2026, reversing sharply from a revised 9.7% jump in June, according to data updated on 15 September 2026. The figures highlight a notable loss of momentum in corporate capital spending after a strong rebound at the end of the second quarter.

The core machinery orders series, tracked on a month-over-month basis, compares each month’s change with the previous month. June’s robust 9.7% increase—measured against May—had suggested a solid pickup in business investment. July’s 3.7% decline versus June, however, points to renewed caution among firms, potentially reflecting uncertainty in the economic outlook and investment planning.

With July marking the first month of contraction following June’s surge, markets and policymakers will be watching upcoming data closely to see whether this pullback proves temporary or signals a more persistent softening in Japan’s capital expenditure cycle.
