U.S. Housing Starts Show Signs of Stabilization in August After Steep July Slump

U.S. housing starts declined 2.6% month-over-month in August 2026, a much smaller drop compared with the sharp 12.4% fall recorded in July, signaling early signs of stabilization in residential construction activity. The latest data, updated on 17 September 2026, reflect a moderation in the pace of decline after a particularly weak prior month.

The July figure, which showed a 12.4% month-over-month contraction versus June, had highlighted a pronounced pullback in building momentum. In contrast, August’s 2.6% decrease suggests that while the housing sector remains under pressure, the downturn is no longer accelerating at the same pace.

On a month-over-month basis, the “Actual” reading for August is measured against July, while the “Previous” reading for July is measured against June. This framework underscores that the sector is still in negative territory but could be moving toward a more gradual adjustment phase rather than a continued sharp retrenchment in starts.
