Canada’s Raw Material Prices Rebound Sharply in August, Snapping July Slump

Canada’s Raw Materials Price Index (RMPI) swung back into positive territory in August 2026, rising 3.1% month-over-month after a 2.2% decline in July, according to data updated on 17 September 2026. The sharp reversal underscores renewed pricing pressure at the early stage of the production chain.

The previous reading showed RMPI falling 2.2% in July 2026 compared with June, before rebounding in August as prices for raw inputs climbed. On a month-over-month basis, the latest figure marks a notable turnaround in cost dynamics for Canadian producers, with August’s gain more than offsetting the prior month’s drop.

The month-over-month comparison framework highlights how volatile raw material costs remain from one month to the next, with August’s upswing indicating a fresh tightening in input conditions after July’s brief relief for manufacturers and resource-intensive industries.
