US Redbook Index Slows to 7.6% YoY, Signaling Cooler Retail Momentum

The latest Redbook data for the United States show a moderation in retail sales growth, with the year-over-year indicator easing to 7.6% as of 22 September 2026, down from a previous reading of 8.5%. The figures reflect a deceleration in the pace of same-store sales growth among large chain retailers.

The Redbook index compares current monthly sales to the same month a year earlier, offering a timely gauge of consumer spending trends. The "actual" figure of 7.6% represents the current month’s gain versus the same month last year, while the prior 8.5% reading reflected the previous month’s performance versus its year-ago counterpart.

The step down in the annual growth rate suggests that while retail activity remains solidly positive, momentum is cooling compared with earlier in the year. Investors and analysts may interpret the softer reading as an early signal of shifting consumer behavior, potentially influenced by evolving economic conditions and household budgeting decisions.
