The NZX 50 slipped 76 points, or 0.6%, to 13,755 in Tuesday morning trade, snapping the gains made in the previous session and mirroring an overnight decline on Wall Street. The drop followed a jump in US Treasury yields, as rising oil prices rekindled inflation concerns and strengthened expectations of another Federal Reserve interest rate hike.
Investors were also positioning ahead of a series of key data releases this week, including New Zealand’s September business confidence figures, China’s PMI data, and the US PCE Index and labour market reports, all of which could influence the Fed’s policy stance at its upcoming meeting.
The benchmark index fell to its lowest level since 18 September, with energy, real estate, and utilities shares exerting the most downward pressure. Notable early decliners included Freightways Group (-1.9%), Channel Infrastructure (-1.7%), South Port NZ (-1.2%), Briscoe Group (-0.9%), Mercury NZ (-0.8%), Mainfreight (-0.5%), and ANZ Group (-0.5%).
In contrast, Hallenstein Glasson rose 4.6% after reporting a 49.9% jump in net profit for the year ended 1 August 2026.
