Germany’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 6.4% in September 2026, matching forecasts and staying at its highest level since 2020. The number of unemployed increased by 12,000 to 3.012 million, exceeding expectations and marking the highest figure since March 2011. On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, unemployment dipped back below 3 million after remaining above that level for the previous two months. Labor Office head Andrea Nahles noted that the typical autumn upturn in the labor market has begun only sluggishly, and that the recent economic recovery has not yet translated into a stronger employment dynamic.
