US Core PCE Inflation Firms in August, Doubling Month-on-Month Pace

The United States’ core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index accelerated in August 2026, rising 0.2% month-on-month compared with a 0.1% increase in July. The August reading, updated on 30 September 2026, indicates a modest pickup in underlying inflation pressure, as measured by the Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge that strips out volatile food and energy components.

On a month-over-month basis, the comparison shows that the pace of core price growth in August was double that of the previous month. In July 2026, core PCE grew 0.1% versus June, while August’s 0.2% increase reflects a slightly firmer inflation trend heading into the early autumn period.

Market participants and policymakers closely watch the month-to-month shifts in core PCE to gauge the persistence of inflation. The August print suggests that while price pressures remain contained, they are not easing as quickly as in the prior month, potentially shaping expectations around the trajectory of U.S. monetary policy going forward.
