The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 0.9% to close at 35,984 on Tuesday, supported by stabilizing Canadian bond yields. The pause in the recent bond selloff, which had driven yields to multi-year highs, lifted credit-sensitive sectors, particularly financials. Among the major banks, RBC gained 1.3%, TD Bank advanced 2.2%, BMO rose 1.3%, and both Scotiabank and CIBC added 1.8%.
Energy stocks also moved higher as oil prices recovered from earlier losses. Canadian Natural climbed 4.8%, Suncor added 3.7%, Imperial Oil gained 4.5%, and Cenovus advanced 4.2%.
In the technology sector, Shopify and Constellation Software each rose 3%, buoyed by strength in US hyperscalers, while Celestica slid 1.7%, mirroring weakness among semiconductor names. Elsewhere, CSG acquired a 9.5% stake in MDA Space, becoming its largest shareholder; MDA shares rose 1.1% on the news.
Miners lagged as gold prices declined. Barrick fell 1.4%, while Agnico Eagle and Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM) each lost 2.1%.
