Brazil Job Creation Falls Short of Expectations

Brazil created 121,305 formal jobs in September 2026, falling short of market expectations of 171,000 and down from 165,827 in August, when job creation reached a four-month high. The September result reflected 2.21 million hires and 2.09 million dismissals.

Four of the five major sectors registered net job gains: services (+81,241), industry (+19,285), commerce (+15,697), and construction (+9,468). Agriculture was the only sector to post a decline, with a net loss of 4,381 jobs.

All five geographic regions recorded job growth, led by the Northeast, which added 49,142 positions. Since the beginning of the year, Brazil has created 1,248,914 formal jobs, and the net balance over the past 12 months stands at 787,073.

The stock of active formal employment contracts reached 48.36 million in September, an increase of 0.25% compared with August.
