US stock market closes higher, Dow Jones gains 0.25%

At the close in the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones rose 0.25%, the S&P 500 index rose 0.43%, the NASDAQ Composite index rose 0.06%.

Merck & Company Inc was the top performer among the components of the Dow Jones index today, up 1.83 points or 2.15% to close at 86.80. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc rose 0.80 points or 1.81% to close at 45.11. Home Depot Inc rose 4.21 points or 1.41% to close at 302.75.

The losers were Visa Inc Class A, which shed 2.86 points or 1.31% to end the session at 216.15. Dow Inc. shares rose 0.42 points (0.68%) to close at 61.25, while Goldman Sachs Group Inc shed 2.11 points (0.67%) to close at 314.15.

Leading gainers among the components of the S&P 500 in today's trading were HP Inc, which rose 14.75% to 40.06, Lamb Weston Holdings Inc, which gained 7.97% to close at 65.26, and also shares of Target Corporation, which rose 5.67% to end the session at 228.19.

The losers were shares of Twitter Inc, which shed 5.40% to close at 48.03. Shares of Etsy Inc shed 3.60% to end the session at 120.95. Quotes of Discovery Inc Class A decreased in price by 3.53% to 23.08.

Leading gainers among the components of the NASDAQ Composite in today's trading were Medavail Holdings Inc, which rose 64.43% to hit 1.41, Trevi Therapeutics Inc, which gained 56.84% to close at 2.98, and also shares of Momentus Inc, which rose 48.47% to end the session at 4.38.

The biggest losers were Blue Water Vaccines Inc, which shed 82.76% to close at 10.17. Shares of Aptinyx Inc lost 49.15% and ended the session at 1.19. Quotes of Integrated Media Technology Ltd decreased in price by 36.11% to 13.11.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the number of securities that fell in price (1739) exceeded the number of those that closed in positive territory (1453), while quotes of 121 shares remained virtually unchanged. On the NASDAQ stock exchange, 2,287 stocks fell, 1,541 rose, and 215 remained at the previous close.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which is based on S&P 500 options trading, fell 2.49% to 21.55.

Gold futures for June delivery added 0.45%, or 8.60, to $1.00 a troy ounce. In other commodities, WTI crude for May delivery rose 0.74%, or 0.71, to $96.94 a barrel. Brent futures for June delivery rose 0.21%, or 0.21, to $101.28 a barrel.

Meanwhile, in the Forex market, the EUR/USD pair remained unchanged at 0.21% to 1.09, while USD/JPY edged up 0.17% to hit 124.00.

Futures on the USD index rose by 0.20% to 99.81.
