At the close of the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones was down 3.12%, the S&P 500 was down 3.57% and the NASDAQ Composite was down 4.99%.
Chevron Corp was the top gainer among the components of the Dow Jones index today, losing 1.33 points (0.79%) to close at 166.26. Coca-Cola Co fell 0.52 points (0.80%) to close at 64.51. Amgen Inc shed 1.75 points or 0.74% to close at 234.35.
The biggest losers were Salesforce.com Inc, which shed 13.18 points or 7.11% to end the session at 172.30. Nike Inc was up 5.89% or 7.43 points to close at 118.63 while Apple Inc was down 5.57% or 9.25 points to close at 156.77. .
Leading gainers among the S&P 500 components in today's trading were EPAM Systems Inc, which rose 10.68% to 346.00, Albemarle Corp, which gained 9.76% to close at 236.50, and shares of Organon & Co, which rose 5.06% to close the session at 34.87.
Etsy Inc was the biggest loser, shedding 16.83% to close at 90.93. Shares of Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp Class A shed 12.75% to end the session at 73.60. Quotes eBay Inc fell in price by 11.72% to 48.04.
Leading gainers among the components of the NASDAQ Composite in today's trading were Cyngn Inc, which rose 17.98% to 3.74, Better Therapeutics Inc, which gained 7.83% to close at 2.34, and shares of Hudson Technologies Inc, which rose 26.89% to end the session at 9.06.
The biggest losers were Bioatla Inc, which shed 41.18% to close at 2.40. Shares of Nephros Inc lost 40.59% and ended the session at 2.53. Singularity Future Technology Ltd lost 28.89% to 4.80.
On the New York Stock Exchange, the number of depreciated securities (2,853) exceeded the number of those that closed in positive territory (354), while quotes of 97 shares remained virtually unchanged. On the NASDAQ stock exchange, 3,174 companies fell in price, 607 rose, and 221 remained at the level of the previous close.
Etsy Inc shares tumbled to a 52-week low, down 16.83% or 18.40 to close at 90.93. eBay Inc shares fell to a 52-week low, shedding 11.72% or 6.38 points to close at 48.04. Bioatla Inc shares fell to all-time lows, dropping 41.18% or 1.68 points to close at 2.40.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which is based on S&P 500 options trading, rose 22.74% to 31.20.
Gold futures for June delivery added 0.56%, or 10.54, to $1.00 a troy ounce. In other commodities, WTI crude for June delivery rose 0.54%, or 0.58, to $108.39 a barrel. Brent futures for July delivery rose 0.77%, or 0.85, to $110.99 a barrel.
Meanwhile, in the Forex market, EUR/USD fell 0.73% to hit 1.05, while USD/JPY edged up 0.83% to hit 130.15.
Futures on the USD index rose 0.94% to 103.56.
