GBP/USD: Trading Tips for Beginner Traders – October 13

Trade Analysis and Trading Tips for the British Pound

The test of the 1.3227 level occurred just as the MACD indicator was beginning to move upward from the zero line, confirming that it was the right point to enter a long position in the pound. As a result, the pair rose toward the target level of 1.3241.

Yesterday's sell-off in the pound was clearly driven more by a lack of buyers than by any genuine deterioration in the market outlook. It was a public holiday in the United States, and the US bond market was closed. Under these conditions, even relatively moderate comments from Beth Hammack about the need for restrictive monetary policy were enough to push GBP/USD lower. Today, the absence of significant UK economic data worked in the pound's favor. With no negative surprises, the pair had an opportunity to recover, and buyers took advantage of it.

In the second half of the day, traders will focus primarily on comments from central bank officials. Yesterday, the market's attention was drawn to Bank of England officials Sarah Breeden and Catherine L. Mann. Megan Greene spoke this morning, while Swati Dhingra is scheduled to speak today. If she emphasizes inflation risks, GBP/USD may have a chance to consolidate above the upper boundary of its sideways channel, which the pair has already moved back into following yesterday's decline. Meanwhile, US officials Christopher Waller, Thomas Barkin, and Susan M. Collins will also speak. Yesterday, the dollar strengthened following Hammack's remarks, and the market will now assess whether these officials share her position. US data, including the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index and existing home sales, will also be released, but in my view, these figures are of secondary importance for the pound.

As for the intraday strategy, I will focus primarily on implementing Scenarios No. 1 and No. 2.

GBP/USD: Trading Tips for Beginner Traders – October 13

Buy Signal

Scenario No. 1: Today, I plan to buy the pound when the price reaches the entry point around 1.3241 (the green line on the chart), targeting a rise to 1.3260 (the thicker green line on the chart). Near 1.3260, I will close the long position and open a short position, targeting a 30–35-point move in the opposite direction from that level. Any further gains in the pound today are likely to remain within the channel. Important! Before buying, make sure that the MACD indicator is above the zero line and has only just begun to rise from it.

Scenario No. 2: I also plan to buy the pound today if the price tests the 1.3230 level twice consecutively while the MACD indicator is in the oversold area. This would limit the pair's downward potential and trigger a reversal to the upside. The price could rise toward the opposite levels of 1.3241 and 1.3260.

Sell Signal

Scenario No. 1: Today, I plan to sell the pound after the price breaks below the 1.3230 level (the red line on the chart), which could trigger a rapid decline in the pair. The key target for sellers will be 1.3217, where I will close the short position and immediately open a long position, targeting a 20–25-point move in the opposite direction from that level. Strong selling pressure on the pound is likely to return only if policymakers adopt a hawkish tone. Important! Before selling, make sure that the MACD indicator is below the zero line and has only just begun to decline from it.

Scenario No. 2: I also plan to sell the pound today if the price tests the 1.3241 level twice consecutively while the MACD indicator is in the overbought area. This would limit the pair's upward potential and trigger a reversal to the downside. The price could decline toward the opposite levels of 1.3230 and 1.3217.

What the Chart Shows:

  • Thin green line — the entry price at which the trading instrument can be bought;
  • Thick green line — the projected price level at which Take Profit can be set or profits can be closed manually, as further gains above this level are unlikely;
  • Thin red line — the entry price at which the trading instrument can be sold;
  • Thick red line — the projected price level at which Take Profit can be set or profits can be closed manually, as further declines below this level are unlikely;
  • MACD indicator. When entering the market, it is important to take overbought and oversold conditions into account.

Important. Beginner Forex traders should exercise extreme caution when deciding to enter the market. Before the release of major fundamental reports, it is best to stay out of the market to avoid exposure to sharp exchange-rate fluctuations. If you decide to trade during news releases, always set stop-loss orders to minimize losses. Without stop-loss orders, you can lose your entire account balance very quickly, especially if you do not use proper money management and trade large position sizes.

Remember that successful trading requires a clear trading plan, such as the one presented above. Making spontaneous trading decisions based on current market conditions is a fundamentally losing strategy for an intraday trader.
