Where to Sell and Buy the Yen: Simple Trading Tips for Beginner Traders on November 5

Japanese Yen Trading Analysis and Trading Tips

The price test at 158.42 occurred when the MACD indicator had just begun moving downward from the zero line, confirming a suitable entry point for buying the US dollar. As a result, the pair declined by 20 and 25 points, respectively.

The yen started the day with the release of domestic economic data, which showed that Japan's economy continues to expand. The final Services Business Activity Index for October came in at 51.7, compared with expectations of 52.0, while the Composite PMI, which combines the services and manufacturing sectors, reached 52.1 against a forecast of 52.3. Both indicators were slightly below expectations but remained above the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction. The deviations were minor, so the market was not significantly disappointed. For the yen, this data is largely neutral, as it indicates that domestic demand remains stable, supporting the prospect of further monetary policy normalization by the Bank of Japan, which investors are anticipating.

However, the external backdrop was more challenging. Yesterday's US economic data supported the dollar. According to ADP, employment increased by 86,000 in October, compared with expectations of 67,000. The US trade deficit narrowed in September, while the ISM Services Index, although slightly below forecasts, remained in expansion territory. A strong labor market reinforces expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike, supporting demand for the US currency. The only indicator that came in below expectations was the US Services PMI, but it did not change the overall picture.

Despite this, the yen continues to put considerable pressure on the dollar and retains the potential for further appreciation. Stable domestic economic activity in Japan, expectations of further Bank of Japan rate hikes, and demand for safe-haven currencies are preventing the US dollar from extending its advantage.

As for the intraday strategy, the focus will primarily be on implementing Scenarios No. 1 and No. 2.

Buy Scenarios

Scenario No. 1: USD/JPY purchases are planned today if the pair reaches the entry point around 158.02 (the thin green line on the chart), with a target of 158.27 (the thicker green line on the chart). Around 158.27, the long positions will be closed, and short positions will be opened in the opposite direction (targeting a reverse move of 30–35 points from this level). It is preferable to resume buying the pair during corrections and significant declines in USD/JPY. Important! Before buying, make sure that the MACD indicator is above the zero line and has just started rising from it.

Scenario No. 2: USD/JPY purchases are also planned today if the price tests 157.84 twice consecutively while the MACD indicator is in the oversold zone. This will limit the pair's downward potential and trigger an upward market reversal. A rise toward the opposite levels of 158.02 and 158.27 can be expected.

Sell Scenarios

Scenario No. 1: USD/JPY sales are planned today only after the pair breaks below 157.84 (the thin red line on the chart), which should lead to a rapid decline. The sellers' main target will be 157.50, where short positions will be closed and long positions will be opened immediately in the opposite direction (targeting a reverse move of 20–25 points from this level). Sellers could return at any moment; all that is needed is any indication from the central bank. Important! Before selling, make sure that the MACD indicator is below the zero line and has just started declining from it.

Scenario No. 2: USD/JPY sales are also planned today if the price tests 158.02 twice consecutively while the MACD indicator is in the overbought zone. This will limit the pair's upward potential and trigger a downward market reversal. A decline toward the opposite levels of 157.84 and 157.50 can be expected.

What the Chart Shows:

  • Thin green line – the entry price at which the trading instrument can be bought.
  • Thick green line – the estimated price at which Take Profit orders can be placed or profits can be closed manually, as further gains above this level are unlikely.
  • Thin red line – the entry price at which the trading instrument can be sold.
  • Thick red line – the estimated price at which Take Profit orders can be placed or profits can be closed manually, as further declines below this level are unlikely.
  • MACD indicator. When entering the market, it is important to consider the overbought and oversold zones.

Important. Beginner Forex traders should exercise extreme caution when making market entry decisions. It is preferable to stay out of the market ahead of major fundamental data releases to avoid exposure to sharp exchange rate fluctuations. If trading during news releases, always place stop-loss orders to minimize potential losses. Without stop-loss orders, the entire trading account balance can be lost very quickly, especially when money management principles are not applied and large position sizes are used.

Remember that successful trading requires a clear trading plan, such as the one presented above. Making spontaneous trading decisions based on current market conditions is inherently a losing strategy for intraday traders.
