Moldovan farmers sustaining great losses after Russia imposed a fruit ban have no doubt their European counterparts is going to suffer the same fate, Associated Press writes. Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance or Rosselkhoznadzor banned the fresh fruit from Moldova on July 18. Besides, Russia introduced the customs duties on Moldovan imports like meat, wheat, sugar, vegetables, alcoholic beverages, furniture etc. As the result, Moldovan farmers do not gather crop as they have no market for it.
Moldova, one of poorest European countries, has enduring trade relationship with Russia. The former used to export 90% of total apple harvest to Russia. Only that market niche making about 1% of Moldova’s GDP might trigger a $50 million loss. The local authorities have not been able to estimate the ‘magnitude of disaster’ so far as the situation keeps worsening.
Furthermore, the parliamentary elections which are scheduled for November are supposed to determine Moldova’s further political course. In case the situation does not improve by this time, the citizens are likely to clamor against the European plan.
