Depression and anxiety take toll on global economy as treatment costs rise

The WHO is sounding the alarm! The majority of people on the planet need help, as they are suffering from depression and anxiety. These issues are costing the global economy $1 trillion each year, a staggering amount!

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety among employees across all sectors cost the global economy $1 trillion annually.

The organization reports that more than one billion people worldwide suffer from mental disorders—almost one in eight people on the planet. At the same time, global government funding for psychiatric care averages just 2% of total healthcare budgets. High-income countries spend $65 per capita, while low-income countries spend only $0.04 per person.

Additionally, depression and anxiety account for the loss of 12 billion working days. This large-scale drop in productivity costs the economy $1 trillion annually (an amount that does not include the direct costs of treating these disorders). Anxiety symptoms worsen cognitive function, decrease concentration and memory, reduce motivation, and cause persistent fatigue.

Previously, WHO experts also noted that more than two billion people around the world currently lack access to clean drinking water. In 2025, one in four people was deprived of this resource. Since 2015, access to clean water has been secured for 961 million people, increasing the proportion of the population without restrictions on drinking water from 68% to 74%. The WHO report states that less developed countries face shortcomings in access to drinking water and poor sanitation twice as often as residents of other nations.
