The majority of Scotts voted to remain part of the United Kingdom. The referendum result showed that independence was backed by less than 50% of people of Scotland. The ‘No’ option got 55.4% of the vote compared to the Yes side of 44.6%. Alex Salmond, Scotland's Prime Minister who called on Scotland to vote for independence, accepted the referendum outcome. But he warned Westminster leaders that the people of Scotland would not tolerate any delay in delivering their pledge of more powers for Holyrood.

The referendum on Scotland’s independence took place September 18. In case Scotts said ‘Yes’ to breaking away from the United Kingdom, the country would be independent on March 24, 2015.
