Heathrow Airport Holdings Limited (“Heathrow”) has agreed to sell its 100% interest in Aberdeen International Airport Limited, Glasgow Airport Limited, and Southampton International Airport Limited to a consortium formed by Ferrovial and Macquarie for £1.048 million ($1.68 billion) in cash.
The Heathrow management announced the decision October 16, 2014. The sale is expected to be completed no later than January 2015 provided that the civil aviation regulator greenlights the deal.
John Holland-Kaye, Chief Executive of Heathrow, said, “This sale enables us to focus on improving Heathrow for passengers and winning support for Heathrow expansion. Heathrow is the UK’s only hub airport, connecting the whole of the UK to the world and bringing economic benefits locally and nationally.”
Glasgow Airport is the second busiest of the U.K.’s airports after Heathrow and serves Scotland’s most populated city.
Aberdeen Airport is the gateway to Europe's energy capital. Apart from regular flights, it operates a large number of helicopter flights transporting more than 500,000 passengers to the North Sea oil and gas platforms.
Southampton Airport is a base airport of the British Flybe.
The overall passenger stream of Heathrow Holdings was 75.6 million in 2013. 72.3 million of this number were served by only London Heathrow.
