Greenpeace activists on Arctic Sunrise vessel organized a campaign against Repsol plans to drill on the coast of the Canary Islands, the Greenpeace press service said.
On October 28, environmentalists set a symbolical rig near Lanzarote and unfurled a 70-meter-long poster calling to support renewable energy.
Greenpeace blames Repsol on many cases of oil pollution in Spain and other countries. The organization called oil production in the Canary Islands "reckless." According to Spanish Greenpeace representative Julio Barea, it will cause irreparable damage to fish, and dozens of rare species - whales, dolphins, and sea turtles.
On October 27, Greenpeace has filed a complaint with the European Commission against the government of Spain that had approved Repsol’s resource exploration.
