Food products from Greece, Cyprus, and Hungary are going to be the first to return to the Russian market as soon as the embargo is lifted. When the embargo ends, Rosselkhoznadzor is likely to allow deliveries only from suppliers audited by experts from the European Union. Sergey Dankvert, the head of Russia's agricultural watchdog, explained that this is connected with long-term lack of supply.
On March 1, Greece asked Russia to abolish restrictions on oranges, strawberry, and peaches to be removed. Earlier, on January 16, the European Commission had applied to Rosselkhoznadzor for a permit to supply meat products and potatoes. Besides, the EC suggested renewing imports of delicacies, high quality meat and dairy products, animal fats and byproducts.
Russia placed an embargo on meat, fruit, vegetables, seafood, and dairy products from the European Union, Australia, Canada, Norway, and the US on August 7, 2014. That was made in response to the sanctions imposed against Russia over the situation in Ukraine.
Later, fish was put on the list too.
