Interior minister Nikos Voutsis said that Greece cannot make a repayment to the IMF due on 5 June, as there aren't enough funds in the state budget. “The four installments for the IMF in June are 1.6 billion euro, this money will not be given and is not there to be given,” he added.
Athens has to transfer four tranches of 1.6 billion euro to the IMF from 5 to 19 June.
As Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, stated earlier, Greece had made substantial concessions during the negotiations with international moneylenders, while expecting their partners to take some steps forward.
He noted that leaving the eurozone will be a disaster for Greece, and the single European currency project will simply fail.
This month, Greece borrowed money from the IMF to make another repayment to the IMF. If debt restructuring is not carried out till June, the country will find itself on the brink of default.
However, German finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, said that no other options are to be considered for Greece, as well as additional aid, for the Athens first of all needs to keep its promises on the current financial assistance program.
