Indian budget airline IndiGo has confirmed its order for 250 A320neo passenger jets produced by the leading French aircraft manufacturer Airbus. According to the firm’s catalogue prices, the total order size equals $26.6 billion.
This is the biggest order by number of planes ever placed on Airbus. The deal will extend the company’s lead against the US Boeing in the Indian market.
Airbus has received a total of 4,100 orders for the A32neo airplanes, including the latest IndiGo deal. Airlines normally get significant quantity discounts on large orders.
Despite its youth (the company has only existed for 9 years), IndiGo already controls a 38 percent share of India’s low-cost flights market.
In January 2011, the airline company purchased 180 Airbus planes. By now, the low-cost carrier has received 100 jets from that order. The deal was worth $15 billion.
IndiGo is planning to extend its aircraft fleet to a thousand air vessels.
