German Chancellor Angela Merkel offered the prospect of support for speeding up Turkey’s long-held ambition to join the European Union. Besides, Germany’s government intends to review the process of issuing visas for Turkish citizens willing to visit the EU. The news appeared in mass media after the recent negotiations between Angela Merkel and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. During the talks, German Chancellor said that visa requirements for Turkish people will be more liberal. She also noted that Germany is ready to help Ankara achieve the standards and requirements imposed by the EU. In return, Turkey pledged to take in illegal migrants sent back by the EU. Moreover, the European leaders have promised a €3bn cash handout for Turkey. As a result, the negotiations turned out to be fruitful and Germany’s political figures are already discussing the issue concerning Turkey’s membership in the EU.
