Over a year, editors of the Time magazine follow persons who make the greatest impact on global developments both for good and for evil. The fact that leader of ISIS Abu Bark al-Baghdadi was named among this year’s recipients points to complete impartiality of assessment.
Considering the scale of troubles that the brutal group causes for the world’s community, nobody will deny the enormous influence of ISIS upon the situation across the globe. Besides, Time’s Person of the Year shortlist included Russian President Vladimir Putin, his Iranian counterpart Hassan Pouhani, Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump, and Black Lives Matter activists who struggle for the rights of African Americans. Despite being outnumbered by male majority, or perhaps because of that, the only lady in the shortlist was named Time’s Person of the Year. The award went to Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel. Throughout the whole year, Merkel was under the spotlight participating in the key economic and political developments in the world. Thus, she played a crucial role in localization of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. Additionally, the Time magazine cited Chancellor’s resolve to overcome the migrant and refugee crisis currently unfolding in Europe. Time has been choosing a Person of the Year since 1927. This prestigious title is awarded by the editor-in-chief of the magazine.
