Christine Lagarde heading for second term as IMF’s chief

Christine Lagarde’s current term as the head of the International Monetary Fund expires rather soon, on July 5th. Earlier, speaking with journalists Ms Lagarde noted that she would seek a second mandate, in case the IMF board put forward such a proposal. Recently, Christine Lagarde has been nominated for the second term. However, she is the only nominee for the position and has no rivals.

"The period for submitting nominations for the position of the next managing director of the International Monetary Fund closed on Wednesday, February 10," said Aleksei Mozhin, dean of the IMF's executive board.

Christine Lagarde is the only candidate that filed the nomination. That is why such a significant process as appointing of the IMF’s managing director hasn’t caused anxiety.

Despite various disagreements over some decisions made by the IMF, there are no doubts that Christine Lagarde is a professional economist. Russia’s Finance Minister Anton Siluanov confirmed that Russia supports Christine Lagarde. Besides, the candidate was also backed by representatives of the US Department of the Treasury. However, during the first five-year term, the IMF’s head was criticized for her strict attitude toward debt restructuring, Greece was a vivid example. At the same time, the IMF showed all its softness to Ukraine by changing even its charter to avoid blocking its financial aid to the country.
