The historic agreement on Iran’s nuclear program was reached in July 2015 between Tehran, the EU, US, and UN Security Council. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, highlighted great importance of Iran’s commitments to nonproliferation of nuclear weapon and global security.
On January 16, 2016, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified that Iran had implemented its pledges, respecting the agreement and UN Security Council Resolution. It means that both the US and EU are obliged to lift their nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions in full.
Benefitting from these milestones, the EU has been revising its bilateral relations with Iran. Federica Mogherini welcomed Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif for his first official visit to the EU on 15 February. The talks in Brussels were focused on EU-Iran bilateral cooperation. The regional issues were also on the agenda, in particular the Syrian conflict. The head of the European diplomacy plans to visit Tehran with other commissioners with a view to establishing a regular political dialogue and building close economic links.
