Europe is actively seeking a long-term solution to the migrant crisis. The EU authorities managed to come to an agreement with Turkey and now all migrants who reach Greece’s islands will be sent back. Besides, Turkey promised to be on the alert for human smuggling.
This deal is a crucial moment in the EU migrant crisis. At present, Turkey is responsible for all migrants rescued by NATO in international waters. The EU authorities are developing the refugee deportation system for those people who have no chances to get the refugee status. Although Turkey is unable to guarantee an immediate reduction in a number of migrants, there are already some positive results. Thus, 76 refugees were returned on March 24th and 71 people were deported on March 25th.
European Commission spokesperson Natasha Berto said that a number of illegal migrants to the European Union has significantly dropped. During the press conference in Brussels, she emphasized that according to the one-week results, only one thousand refugees arrived in the EU. Earlier, thousands of them came every day.
Turkey wants €6 billion and visa-free travel to the EU for hosting refugees.
